Our Therapy Assistants are experienced in providing supports under the guidance of the Developmental Educators.

Developmental Educators

Developmental Educators (DE’s) are qualified disability professionals dedicated to fostering empowerment, social inclusion and quality of life for people with disabilities and their families.

As Developmental Educators, we personalise and individually write support plans according to the person’s identified needs, desires and chosen goals.  

We get to know you and your needs through our framework to establish meaningful and realistic goals.  Developmental Educators at Grow and Flourish can assist with the following supports in home, school, in the community or at a venue of your choice.


Developmental Educators can support you in the following areas:

    • Expressing Needs and Wants: Teaching individuals how to effectively communicate their preferences, needs, and feelings through speech, gestures, or alternative communication methods.

    • Using AAC Devices: Supporting the use of Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) tools, such as communication boards or speech-generating devices.

    • Conversational Skills: Developing turn-taking, active listening, and staying on topic during conversations.

    • Understanding Non-Verbal Cues: Teaching recognition and interpretation of body language, facial expressions, and tone of voice.

    • Initiating Interactions: Supporting individuals in starting conversations and joining group activities.

    • Building Friendships: Teaching how to form and maintain positive peer relationships, including sharing, cooperation, and trust-building.

    • Conflict Resolution: Equipping individuals with strategies to handle disagreements and navigate social challenges.

    • Understanding Social Norms: Educating about appropriate behaviour in various settings (e.g., school, workplace, community).

    • Empathy Development: Encouraging perspective-taking and understanding the feelings of others.

     

    • Personal Hygiene: Teaching routines for bathing, grooming, oral care, and dressing.

    • Meal Preparation: Supporting individuals in planning, preparing, and cooking meals, including using kitchen appliances safely.

    • Household Management: Developing skills for cleaning, laundry, organizing living spaces, and basic home maintenance.

    • Budgeting: Helping individuals create and manage a budget for expenses and savings.

    • Money Handling: Teaching skills such as counting money, using EFTPOS, or understanding bills and invoices.

    • Shopping Skills: Assisting with making shopping lists, comparing prices, and purchasing items independently.

    • Daily Routines: Structuring schedules for tasks, appointments, and leisure activities.

    • Using Tools: Training in using calendars, alarms, and reminders to stay organised.

    • Prioritising Tasks: Helping individuals break down complex tasks and complete them efficiently.

    • Public Transport Use: Teaching how to navigate buses, trains, and other public transport systems.

    • Accessing Services: Supporting individuals to independently use community resources, such as libraries, medical services, or recreational facilities.

    • Social Participation: Encouraging involvement in social clubs, volunteering, or community events.

     

    • Home Safety: Educating on locking doors, using emergency contacts, and avoiding potential hazards.

    • Online Safety: Guiding safe internet use, protecting personal information, and recognizing online scams.

    • Emergency Preparedness: Teaching how to respond to emergencies, including calling for help or using first aid.

    • Functional Behaviour Analysis: Identifying the triggers (antecedents) and outcomes (consequences) of behaviours to understand their purpose.

    • Behaviour Monitoring: Using tools like observation charts or journals to track patterns and progress over time.

    • Environmental Modifications: Adjusting the physical or social environment to reduce triggers and promote positive behaviour (e.g., creating sensory-friendly spaces).

    • Visual Supports: Using visual schedules, social stories, or cues to help individuals understand expectations and transitions.

    • Skill Development: Teaching alternative ways to communicate needs, such as using words or gestures instead of challenging behaviours.

    • Coping Strategies: Teaching relaxation techniques, deep breathing, or mindfulness to manage anxiety or frustration.

    • Recognizing Emotions: Helping individuals identify their emotions and develop strategies to express them appropriately.

    • Calm-Down Techniques: Supporting individuals to create and use a "calm-down plan" when they feel overwhelmed.

    • Crisis Intervention: Providing step-by-step strategies to safely manage and de-escalate challenging situations.

    • Positive Reinforcement: Using rewards and praise to encourage desired behaviours.

    • Restorative Practices: Supporting the individual in understanding the impact of their actions and working toward reconciliation or restitution.

    • Family Training: Guiding families to implement behaviour strategies consistently across home and community settings.

    • Team Coordination: Working with other professionals (e.g., psychologists, speech therapists, educators) to ensure consistent support.

    • Individualised Behaviour Plans: Developing comprehensive, person-centred behaviour support plans with achievable goals.

Our Therapy Assistants are experienced in providing supports under the guidance of the Developmental Educators. We are very lucky at Grow and Flourish to have two very competent Therapy Assistants who are well equipped to support all Grow and Flourish participants.
